How does the line manager decide whether a member of staff who is not doing their job properly should be given support or disciplined?
  • The first thing the line manager should do is have an informal chat with the member of staff.
  • After that, it is a matter of the line manager's judgement, but the manager should bear in mind that if someone is not performing properly, the reason may not be laziness (which is a disciplinary issue). The employee may lack the knowledge to do their job properly or they may lack the ability.
  • In each case, they need the line manager's support and possibly some training.
  • In more extreme cases, the line manager may need to consider the option of redeployment, in agreement with the member of staff, particularly if the underlying cause is disability, but they should seek advice from occupational health before deciding on any option.
