A line manager feels that a member of staff is not pulling their weight, but they don’t want to raise the issue because they happen to be pregnant. What should the manager do?
  • Pregnant employees have certain rights that do not apply to other members of staff.
  • In particular, a risk assessment should be carried out once the line manager knows the employee is pregnant.
  • Once it has been done and any changes necessary to protect the pregnant employee are made, the line manager can reassess the issue of performance.
  • If, however, the issue of poor performance is unrelated to the pregnancy, the line manager must manage the situation in line with all other employees.
