What issues does a line manager need to take into consideration before taking any action?

A line manager should ask themselves the following questions:

  • Are they expecting too much of their employee?
  • How has the individual been performing in recent months?
  • Does the employee's poor performance seem to be related to a change in personal circumstances?
  • Is the member of staff's health an issue?
  • Is the member of staff's disability having an impact?
  • Has the employee been absent because of sickness for any length of time?
  • Have there been any changes to their duties that they have not properly understood or the line manager has not properly explained?
  • Have there been any changes to the team which may have affected the employee?
  • Is the line manager expecting too much from someone in that grade?
  • Has the individual raised any concerns with the line manager about their behaviour or the behaviour of someone else, and how did the line manager deal with those concerns?
