NHS Blood and Transplant People First

Blood Donation Recruitment

The recruitment process is the same for all Directorates across NHSBT and is set out in the Recruitment section of People First.

There are however some differences within Blood Donation which are outlined in this section.  Additionally, for ease of reference, there are some Top Tips for Blood Donation Recruiting Managers to help you with your recruitment.

To start recruitment please complete the electronic recruitment request. For the full approval process please see the recruitment page.

Nursing Roles

Standard recruitment documentation has been agreed for the roles of Sister/Charge Nurse, Area Nurse/Area Charge Nurse and Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse.  This includes the recruitment profile, application questions, interview questions and interview assessment form.  These are available from your recruitment contact.

We have a selection of recruitment materials including posters, leaflets and pens available from your recruitment contact which can be used to promote your vacancy in your local area.

It is strongly recommended that the shortlisted candidates attend a session visit or speak to someone about the role.

The NCQ team provide the Recruiting Manager with support for planning and coordinating the induction training for a new nurse.  It is therefore essential that you contact your local Training and Practice Lead Nurse as soon as you receive confirmation to proceed with your recruitment.

Note: You must have a nurse on your interview panel when recruiting for nursing roles

Once you have a start date for your new recruit, it is essential to set up a pre-meet with NCQ Team Training and Practice Lead Nurse and the mentor allocated to support the new nurse.

TIP:  It can be difficult to recruit to nursing posts so you may find it useful to consider the advice set out in the Top Tips when Difficult to Recruit.

Disclosure and Barring Service Checks (DBS)

If you have all your clearances but are just waiting for the DBS disclosure, your new starter can commence employment with NHSBT provided you complete a risk assessment declaration form confirming that they will be supervised AT ALL TIMES.  This is in exceptional circumstances provided that the:

  • DBS Disclosure has been requested
  • Application Form does not disclose any cautions or criminal convictions
  • Pre-employment Declaration Form does not disclose any cautions or criminal convictions
  • All other pre-employment checks have been satisfactorily completed

Starting Arrangements

When all pre-appointment checks have been satisfactorily completed, you will need to contact your new starter to agree a start date.

Once you have notified your recruitment contact of the agreed start date your recruitment contact will issue your candidate with a final offer letter and contract of employment (or bank agreement for Team Assistants).

You can then start to plan for their arrival. Please also note the following:-

  • Contact your NCQ Facilitator to agree the planning of your new recruits induction training. Consider who will be involved in delivering this training and when / where this will take place.  A pre-meet with your NCQ Facilitator is essential.
  • Arrange to go through the induction their first day, including the completion of their training plan and Personal Development Plan
  • Review the new starters pages on People First to arrange grey fleet, uniform, identity badges and swipe cards, shine academy account, IT access and email

Paying Bank Workers

Complete the new starter documentation for payroll on the first day your Team Assistant works.

Bank workers claim payment for the hours they work via the on-line EASY system.  It is important that managers fully understand the payments due and make sure their bank workers understand how to claim payment.

TIPs for pay and EASY:

  • Make sure your Team Assistant self-registers on EASY after you’ve got the assignment number (remember to allow a couple of days for the data interface to set up their EASY account before they self-register).
  • Show your new Team Assistant where to find the Quick Guide – timesheet claim guide for BD Bank Workers(on People First).
  • Show them where more information about Pay and EASY can be found on People First.
  • Explain the payroll deadlinesand the need to submit their claim promptly at the end of each month
  • Remind them that they can access EASY from their tablet/iPad, Smartphone as well as from a work or home computer

Be especially vigilant when checking their first 2 or 3 claims to ensure all claims are correct and in-line with NHS Staff Terms and Conditions. You may find the Quick Guide – timesheet claim guide for BD Bank Workers and the information in the Approving in EASY section useful.
