Antibody Testing

Antibody Test Information

Antibody testing is drawing to a close, with all areas having had some access to it, or planned access.

Access for some teams has been difficult, with outside testing capacity mainly at regional hospitals, so thank you for your patience with this voluntary testing.

Please keep checking this page for the most up to date testing availability.

The test works by taking a blood sample and testing for the presence of anti-bodies to the CoViD-19 virus, indicating if you have previously had the virus. Anti-body tests differ to the virus swab (PCR) test, which tests to see if you currently have the virus. Please be aware that if you receive a positive anti-body result it does not mean that you are immune. There is also no firm evidence that the presence of antibodies means someone cannot be re-infected with the virus or will not pass it on to someone else. If someone with antibodies tests positive for coronavirus in the future, they still need to follow social distancing measures.

The antibody test is not a clinical test. It will be used to tell whether someone has already had the virus to provide accurate data about the antibodies developed. The information will help clinicians and scientists to better understand the prevalence of the virus in different regions across the country. Data on the number of positive and negative cases are reported to PHE.
