Interim Annual Leave Arrangements - 2020/21

It is important during this period of significant pressure, that you continue to take your annual to give you a break from work and allow you to rest and recuperate in order to maintain your own physical and mental well-being.  As such we encourage you to spread your annual leave over the year, where possible, taking at least one week of annual leave every three months.

We recognise that the COVID-19 pandemic affects colleagues in differing ways; for some it may not be possible to take all your 2020/21 leave, whereas for others it may be beneficial to have access to additional leave.

To support you and help you manage your annual leave a set of interim arrangements have been put in place;

  • Buy annual leave - The usual NHSBT buy annual leave scheme has closed for the 2020/21 leave year.
  • Sell annual leave - An additional application window to sell annual leave will open in September with an increased amount you can sell of up to the equivalent of 7 days leave in total (52.5 hours) pro rata for part-time employees.  For full information see the Sell Annual Leave page.  Requests will be subject to approval of your manager, budget holder and final NHSBT review before confirmation of whether any request can be fulfilled in full, or in part.  There will still be another application window in January 2021.

Any request will need to be approved by your Line Manager therefore you should have a discussion with your manager about your needs prior to applying for any of the above options. That will enable you to work together to discuss your individual needs, your ability to take annual leave and ensure you are taking regular time away from work to support your health and well-being, whilst balancing operational needs.

Requests will also be subject to final NHSBT review before confirmation of whether any request can be fulfilled in full, or in part.

Full details of all 3 options are in the NHSBT Interim Annual Leave Arrangements Guidance.
