Leadership Ladder

Every day we bring the values of caring, expert and quality to our roles. As a manager or leader you are vital in ensuring we live and breathe our values and behaviours in everything we do. Our Leadership Ladder supports our values and behaviours, providing a recognised standard for leadership and management and putting people at the heart of NHSBT.

There are three different levels of the Ladder:

  • Level 1 ‘The Effective Leader’ – for aspiring managers, supervisors, team leaders, people managers and senior leaders
  • Level 2 ‘The Engaging Leader’ – for people managers and senior leaders
  • Level 3 ‘The Strategic Leader’ – for senior leaders

Start with Level 1 of the Ladder, demonstrating your skills and behaviours through the levels depending on your current job role or career aspirations. There are easy to use assessment tools to help you and your manager identify where you meet the behaviours and where your areas of development may be. Each level builds on the last, so People Managers need to complete the assessment tool for Levels 1 and 2, Senior Leaders (8a+) need to complete Levels 1, 2 and 3. Then use the resources and activities to support you in these developmental areas.

Leadership Ladder & Inclusion

“putting equality, diversity and inclusion at the centre of our recovery and transformation efforts, with the objective of saving and improving more lives and making NHSBT a great place to work for everyone” – Betsy Bassis May 2020

Enabling all colleagues to be their best selves is vital to the success of NHSBT. Leaders of all levels play a pivotal role in creating and sustaining an environment that is equal, diverse and inclusive.  You will already have completed your Mandatory Training in My ESR and have a good understanding of the Diversity and Inclusion basics.  As we continue to work with you we recognise the Leadership Ladder needs to reflect this broader expectation of Leaders and Managers, so we are updating the Leadership Ladder.  In the mean time we would encourage you to consider Equality, Diversity, Inclusion

It is the responsibility of your line manager to complete the Reporting Tool upon agreed completion of each level.

Each level is divided into sections that contain elements providing an overview of recognised standards, examples of what behaviours should look like in practice and some activities, resources, tools and guidance to support you.

Leadership ladder reporting tool

In the current climate we are not producing certificates of completion of a level of the Leadership ladder or sending lanyard reels. This will be reviewed in December 2020.

We would encourage manager's to keep their own account of their direct reports who have completed a level of the Leadership Ladder
