My Protected Characteristics

The Equality Act, 2010 protects a number of characteristics, including age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, gender, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity status.

Did you know:

  • Only 2.1% of colleagues at NHSBT have declared they have a disability?
  • Only 2.6% of colleagues at NHSBT  have declared they are LGBT+?
  • 5% of colleagues prefer not to declare their ethnicity?
  • 8% of colleagues say they have experienced discrimination (unfair treatment) because of their protected characteristic?

It is our aim to improve our inclusivity by monitoring equality of opportunity and employment practices to help prevent discrimination, so it is important that we collect the right protected characteristic data to be able to support you and other colleagues.

Report your LGBT+ status here

Report your disability, ethnicity, religion or other protected characteristic here   (pease ensure you review the section below 'How to change your protected characteristic on ESR' and work through the Guidance on how to make the changes)

If everyone self-reports their status we will be better able to:

  • Monitor the equality of opportunity of access to development by different protected characteristic groups
  • Monitor access to promotions by protected characteristic group
  • Monitor engagement satisfaction levels by protected characteristic group
  • Monitor equality of treatment in the way that we apply our employment processes by different protected characteristic groups.

This will help us better understand ways to support all colleagues at NHSBT and how to use our existing employee networks (BAME, LGBT+ and Disability Advocates) to better support our colleagues.

Is my protected characteristic information Confidential?

All your personal data is held securely within the NHS Electronic Staff Record system (ESR) and your protected characteristic information is not visible to your manager.

NHSBT will only use protected characteristic information to monitor and review our progress in meeting our obligations in respect of Equality and Diversity legislation.

When you declare or update your  protected characteristic information you can be certain that this will not be used for any other purpose.

The benefits of self-reporting protected characteristics.

We strive to provide an inclusive environment for all our colleagues. If we don’t have protected characteristics reported, there is less we can do to identify overall colleague needs and to address national issues such as discrimination and harassment for protected characteristics.

For example, colleagues disclosing their sexual orientation has enabled us to review data resulting in the launch of our LGBT+ network, which has already made advances to improving inclusivity at NHSBT (such as a Stonewall Membership).

If we foster a culture within NHSBT where people are happy to confidentially report  this information, we in turn will be able to act upon the information to be more responsive as an employer, with policies procedures and working practices that better reflect the needs of our workforce.

Can I change or remove my status once it has been declared?

Yes, just log into MyESR to update your information. You can then change your status to ‘prefer not to say.’ if you prefer
