To ensure we improve inclusivity across NHSBT, we are asking you to self-report your status on MyESR.

The Equality Act 2010 protects colleagues for a number of characteristics, including age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity status.

Did you know that only 2.1% of colleagues have declared they have a disability and only 2.6% of colleagues have declared their sexual orientation?

If everyone self-reports their status we can monitor:

  • equality of opportunity of access to development by protected characteristic groups
  • access to promotions 
  • engagement satisfaction levels and equality of application to our processes by different protected characteristic groups

This will help better understand our workforce at NHSBT and how to use our existing employee networks (BAME, LGBT+, Disability Advocates and the Women’s Network) to provide support.

"Capturing data on sexual orientation and gender identity is important to help NHS Blood and Transplant create an inclusive environment, where every one of us is performing at our best.

Collecting this data is not the same as encouraging LGBT+ colleagues to be open about their sexual orientation or gender identity if they do not wish to be - because this information is declared and held confidentially, even if you are not out in the workplace.

Data monitoring will give the organisation a deeper understanding into the impact of our work practices and policies. It can reveal what working at NHSBT is like for LGBT+ people and identify any visible or hidden barriers which may prevent us from realising our full potential."
