People Development Skills

In the current climate all face to face courses have been postponed

We are committed to supporting you to get the best out of your work, to improve your basic skills, knowledge and behaviour in a range of day to day activities.  We are in the process of updating our People Skills programmes to provide a new suite of online learning resources which will be available on Shine Academy

Influencing Skills

This 2 day programme will enable you to develop your effectiveness in getting your views and opinions across and securing an agreed outcome in a variety of situations - one to one, group meetings or presenting information in more formal settings.

Attending influencing skills must have been identified as part of your recent PDPR, If attending this programme has not been identified you speak to your line manager about your development interest and gain their approval for this to form part of your development plan for this year. Once this is agreed, then you will be able to select that this is part of your PDPR and submit your form.

Online Courses

We recognise that people are becoming increasingly busy and that travelling to attend training events can prove to be difficult. With the roll out of the new desktop, it makes sense to embrace this digital platform. Therefore, we are designing a new suite of online learning resources, which will be available on Shine Academy and will replace face to face delivery where these exist for these programmes.  These will include:

  • Customer 1st
  • Courageous Conversations
  • Effective Communication Skills
  • Presenting with Confidence

There are short, self directed learning resources available on Shine Academy to support you in personal development, they are located in the People Skills category.

There are also on-line resources for Performance Management and Coaching and Mentoring available through the Learning Hub

Courses now available on Shine Academy

  • Recruitment & Selection - located in the Miscellaneous e-learning courses category

Coaching and Mentoring

A coach helps a person to achieve specific goals focussing on specific tasks or objectives and is usually time-limited. Coaching helps a person to improve, develop, learn new skills, find personal success, and achieve aims and to manage life change and personal challenges.

A mentor enables a person to make a significant transition in knowledge, skills, or thinking. It usually involves matching an individual member of staff to a senior person within an organisation, who acts as an adviser and guide on personal and professional development over a continuing period of time.

Typical reasons for working with a coach include a desire to:

  • Improve performance
  • Improve confidence and performance
  • Bring about behavioural changes
  • Improve leadership

Before submitting your request for either a coach or mentor, you need to speak to you manager to ensure they support your request. Once you have your Manager's support, please complete this form and a member of OWD will contact you.
