Work Experience and Placements

From 01 April 2020, NHSBT is not able to accept new applications for work experience or work placements for start in 2020.

If you have a work experience or placement place confirmed to start after 01 April 2020, your supervising manager will be in contact nearer the date of your programme to confirm if it is able to go ahead.

If you are a high school or 6th form student interested in participating in our corporate work experience programme in Summer 2021, please check back in October 2020.

We recognise providing work experience and placements enables individuals to gain experience in our workplace.

Work experience is defined as having the following criteria:

  • For a period of up to a maximum of 2 weeks
  • Placed by an educational establishment
  • Minimum age of 14
  • Known learning outcomes
  • Must be supervised during working activities
  • Unpaid by NHSBT
  • Not on ESR

A work placement is defined as having the following criteria:

  • Normally up to a maximum of 12 months
  • Placed by educational establishment/employer
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Unpaid by NHSBT
  • Not on ESR

This information will allow managers to support requests for work experience and work placement when it does not affect the provision of our day to day service.

Should you receive an enquiry directly from a student or learner, an educational establishment, or employer and you are able to facilitate their requirements, ask them to complete the (currently closed) on line application. This will ensure that we capture all of the information we need to initiate such a request.

As a work experience or work placement supervisor, you may be asked to confirm Health and Safety, insurance and liability information to the learner's sponsor. This information is in the Related Links section on this page: MPD470 confirms our responsibilities when young people visit NHSBT sites. If you are asked to provide further evidence of our public or employer liability insurance, the certificate is available from the Safety section on People First under the Our Strategy page.

If you can't find the information you are looking for you can Raise a query online.
