Work experience for School and College Students

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) offers an annual science-based work experience programme at some of our centres. It is co-ordinated by our Scientific and Clinical Training and Education team. The programme is for students aged 14-18 years (Years 10-13) who are interested in scientific or laboratory careers. Students must be sponsored to participate by their school or college.

You can apply for work experience here. Applications are now open and will close at 9pm, Sunday 21 April 2024.

In 2024, we are offering programmes as below: 

  • Newcastle (Holland Drive): 03 - 07 June
  • Newcastle (Holland Drive): 10 - 14 June
  • London (Tooting): 10 - 14 June
  • Bristol (Filton): 08 - 12 July
  • Barnsley (Dodworth): 15 - 19 July

 We are only offering programmes at these centres and there are no opportunities at other sites in 2024.

 Successful applicants can expect:

  • to learn about the different departments that support our life saving work and how we support the wider NHS 
  • to meet colleagues in a variety of scientific and caring roles within our organisation include nursing and donor/patient care positions
  • a hands-on practical in our on-site training lab 
  • an advice session to learn about careers in science, medicine and/or nursing.

We are not able to provide feedback on the progress of individual applications. Therefore, if you have not received an offer of a place by Friday 3 May, unfortunately your application was not successful.
