Types of employment

  • Permanent - Employed on a permanent basis.

  • Fixed Term - Employed for a specific purpose on a temporary basis with an end date e.g. maternity cover.

  • Apprentices – Employed on a fixed term contract (FTC) with an additional requirement to complete an apprenticeship qualification. Further information regarding apprenticeships can be found on the Apprenticeships page on Link.

  • Secondment – A secondment is the temporary transfer of an employee to a different post or area within NHSBT (or another organisation) for a specific purpose and time. For further information visit the Secondments and Fixed Term page.

  • Medical and R&D - Recruitment to Speciality Doctor roles will follow the standard recruitment process. However we must follow the NHS Regulations for Recruitment of Medical Consultants guidance.

  • Bank Workers - Bank workers are flexible, temporary workers, not on a permanent contract, who are available to cover shifts as needed.  Employees who are leaving or retiring can be appointed to the Bank, at the discretion of their manager, and if they wish to. For employees whom are retiring please see the Flexible Retirement Page. There is no obligation to provide them with work, or for them to accept work.  They can only be appointed to undertake work in the same capacity as the role they were most recently employed in at NHSBT.  This is to ensure they are competent and safe to do the work.   For Bank Events assistants only, opportunities to join the Bank are advertised externally.   The Manager of the Bank worker is responsible for ensuring that the individual maintains their competence to undertake temporary work, including keeping professional registrations, training, and any other role-specific requirements up to date. To arrange a Bank Worker contract please complete a Direct Hire Request form.

  • Honorary – An honorary contract is a legal agreement entitling a person whose primary employer is not NHSBT to work directly with NHS patients on an unpaid basis, especially for the purposes of research or training. The Direct Hire Process Guidance outlines the process you need to follow. To arrange an honorary contract please complete a Direct Hire Request form.
