Increase in National Living Wage from 1 April 2022

As a result of the increase in the National Living Wage (NLW), the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has increased the first two pay steps of the band 2 pay scale from £18,546 p.a. to £18,870 p.a. with effect from 1 April 2022.

Please note the 2022/23 cost of living pay award has not been agreed yet, so the DHSC are making this increase to the first two points of the band 2 pay scale to ensure compliance with the NLW.  Once the 2022/23 pay award is agreed and paid it will be backdated to 1 April 2022

Devolved Administrations


The Scottish Government has now agreed the 2021 pay award which is effective from 1 December 2020. 

The Scottish 2021 pay circular can be found here and contains the new payscales.


The Welsh Government has agreed a 3% pay award uplift for NHS staff in Wales which will be back dated to 1st April 2021.

Colleagues will receive the pay award and arrears in their September 2021 salaries.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland have agreed a 3% pay deal which will be backdated to 1 April 2021. The new salaries will be paid in January 2022 salaries with arrears from 1 April 2021 paid in February 2022 salaries.
