Apply for a career break
To be able to be considered for a career break you need to have a minimum of 12 months continuous NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) service. A career break can be a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 5 years.
Before applying for a career Break you need to discuss:
- your reasons in detail with your manager, who will consider your application in line with operational requirements.
The details of the discussion should include:
- Dates
- Notice period
- Your job and how it will be back filled
- Contact arrangements
Your discussion should be noted and confirmed in writing to you by your manager.

Career Break & Pensions
While you are on a Career Break, NHS Pension Scheme members have the choice to pay their contributions for up to 6 months. The employer is also required to make their contribution payments accordingly for the first 6 months. Please use the Guidance provided to setup Pension contributions whilst on Career Break.

In most situations, we are flexible in allowing time off work for a variety of reasons, providing reasonable time off for relatively short periods of time, to help you.
