Social Media

Social Media is the term used to describe websites or online tools which allow users to share content and interact with each other.

Social Media includes public platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, LinkedIn, work-based platforms such as Viva Engage, messaging services such as WhatsApp, emails, blogs, and forums such as Threads.  Social Media platforms are changing and evolving as technology develops.

NHSBT appreciate that Social Media platforms such as What’s App are increasingly being used across Directorates and Teams and recognise and support the value of Social Media, however, at the same time we also need to understand how we use it appropriately.

The updated Social Media Acceptable Use Policy with supporting Frequently Asked Questions provides guidance and a framework for Social Media use, enabling interactions to exchange information, opinions and experiences to learn, develop and access services.  We recognise that there is huge potential in this space and that our employees (engaged in any capacity) and agency workers are our best ambassadors and advocates for promoting our work.

However, we also recognise the reputational risks of Social Media.  This Policy with supporting Frequently Asked Questions document seeks to give direction for appropriate and safe use of Social Media in both a personal and professional capacity.

Can you ensure that you take the time to read both the Policy and FAQ’s and if you do have any questions to Raise my HR Direct Query who will triage the call to where your query will be best placed to be answered.

Additional Guidance

Following the successful Social Media briefings held earlier this year to discuss the revised Social Media Policy, we are pleased to report a high level of attendance and engagement at all three briefings that were held. The interactive sessions saw an abundance of participation and thoughtful questions raised by attendees.

Among the key topics discussed were queries relating to subject access, data storage practices, and the utilisation of platforms like WhatsApp. Your enquiries and questions were all noted, and the Policy Team have worked with other subject matter experts in NHSBT to address the questions raised.

To provide further support and clarity, the Policy Team have produced a set of Question and Answers (Q&As) derived from the Social Media briefings.

For those who couldn't attend or wish to revisit the discussions, a recording of the Social Media briefing is available on Link, along with the Q&A’s.
